So I was enjoying the new Sonic movie on my PC when suddenly I noticed a burning smell for about 4 to 5 seconds, then it disappeared completely. Around 10 minutes later, I felt the back of my PSU and saw no signs of any odor. My other components didn’t show any smell either. When I held a grocery bag near me while cleaning, the smell returned. Is it my computer or the environment that’s causing this? It’s a funny question, but I’m curious about how long such burning smells from the PSU can last.

That's exactly what I was looking for. Yes, it has a strong odor. You don’t need to be extremely close to smell it; a bit of proximity usually works.
It depends on the exact cause and extent of the damage. If you can't detect the smell at the PSU via the fan grille or elsewhere, but you caught another scent when a grocery bag was nearby, it likely means you smelled seasoned chips or something that may have been opened or damaged. if the psu had weird smell, there is already a burned capacitor on it. Your just lucky its still working after some components burned. I would still not consider using it anymore since there is already a short on your psu. If its still under warranty i will request for RMA or buy a new one.
