Over the years, my internet performance on my computer has steadily declined. Despite several adjustments and troubleshooting steps, the issue persists. It's becoming increasingly annoying to use it now. Even though my phone receives a solid 10 Mbps, my computer only manages about 2 Mbps at most, which is unusual. I initially thought formatting might help, and it briefly improved to around 6 Mb/s, but after a few minutes it dropped again to 4 Mb/s before stabilizing. I’m puzzled by this inconsistency. I’ve tried clearing the DNS cache and other fixes, but nothing seems to resolve the problem. I’m concerned there might be malware affecting my hard drive, especially since I have Windows and essential applications installed. My system also has a couple of games and programs that run smoothly after installing a fresh Windows copy. Is there anyone who can assist me with this? Thank you in advance for your help—I really need a solution before my performance keeps deteriorating.

Check the expected download and upload rates your ISP provides. Understand what you’re being charged for. Determine if wired connections offer faster speeds compared to wireless. Confirm whether other users are sharing the same link during your speed checks.

Hello Mr.Falcon1986, thank you for your response. I pay for 12mb/s download and 1mb/s upload, which is what I receive when my computer is directly connected to the modem. During testing with four people online, speeds remained around that level. Now only I’m connected since everyone else is sleeping, but it doesn’t seem much better. Also, I can’t keep the connection because it goes through a hallway where someone walks by every 20 seconds, risking trips. My mom doesn’t like cables around the house, and distance isn’t an issue for me. On my phone I get 10mb/s, but on my PC it’s not the same. Sorry if my English isn’t perfect—I’m trying my best despite being a non-native speaker.

Additionally I have two Wi-Fi adapters. One I purchased yesterday and another that I had for three years still functions well when multiple devices are connected to the same network. The new one performs adequately when no devices are connected at the moment. I’m seeing around 6-7 Mb/s with the new adapter, whereas the old one gave about 2 Mb/s. During peak usage with the new adapter I get up to 9 Mb/s, while the old one consistently delivers similar results. Sometimes the old one works better than the new one, sorry for any confusion.

You might want to explore a wireless access point instead. I believe a wifi adapter won't fix the signal problem you're facing. Wireless access points help broaden network coverage, especially the wireless part. The only drawback is you'll need an Ethernet cable to link it directly to your modem/router. You should discuss this with your mother to ensure you get the performance you expect.

We discussed it with her and she declined, though it seems I might be able to connect my modem near my room. That way, I could have my PC wired directly. Hope it works! Thanks for your time.
