Slow internet connection
Slow internet connection
Hi Everyone, my Netgear R6220 AC1200 router now delivers 250 Mbps on the 5 GHz band. With a wired connection I get full speed. The "Wi-Fi SweetSpot" app reports around 500 Mbps nearby and about 350 Mbps across the room with a wall. My actual speed is usually near 200 Mbps on WiFi. Could this be due to the app's readings, my phone (OnePlus 6), or is it something else? My desktop and the Asus Rampage V Extreme also show similar numbers. I was thinking about upgrading for a year, but maybe wait for 802.11ax devices to become more common?
The main issue here is the blockage from brick walls, which strongly affects WiFi and especially 5GHz signals. Try using 2.4GHz as well. Likely, you'll need to purchase an additional router.
I mentioned earlier that the test app displays speeds near 500 Mbps in the same room, not actual internet performance. I’m unsure about its accuracy or measurement method. I also used another app from the Play Store, which gave comparable results. Perhaps using iperf could provide a more reliable assessment?
I used it to check my internet speed. I wanted to find out what my router can handle. Also, I ran a test between two laptops using iperf and saw less than 100 Mbps, which I realize isn't accurate.
At first glance, it appears to show just the connection speed, not the real data transfer rate. These are separate concepts; for instance, if several devices send data simultaneously, each could have a 500Mbps connection, but only a portion would be achieved due to limited bandwidth and shared resources. To measure actual transfer speed, connect a PC to the router via Ethernet, start an HTTP server, and move a file using Wi-Fi.
It should mostly accomplish the same outcome. I also suggest using a fairly substantial file size, such as 2GB or higher, to allow the transfer speed enough time to stabilize.
