Slow internet connection
Slow internet connection
I own a broadband service that includes a phone line, which was advertised at 20mbps up to 1000GB. It performed well until recently when speeds fell to around 2mbps or less, typically showing 10-11mbps during speed tests. I filed a complaint, and the technician examined the modem and phone line, concluding everything was fine. However, my connection still lags below 2mbps, which is disappointing given the payment made. What confuses me is that during random tests, speeds briefly return to normal (10-11mbps), only to drop again after a few minutes. I’m unsure if my ISP is intentionally throttling my connection or if there’s an issue with the modem or the Wi-Fi network, which has been in use for six years. Without understanding the technical details, it seems possible that the line quality might be acceptable sometimes, but the ISP can’t guarantee consistent performance. My router’s metrics show a stable signal (SNR 9.0-15.5 dB, attenuation 22.9-13.0 dB), and speeds range from 12,495 to 62.1 kbps. I’m wondering if a new modem is needed or if there’s a problem with the telephone exchange or ISP connection. The results are consistent across all devices—laptop, PC, handhelds.
Are you certain you're not confusing Mb and MB? Your connection speed is about 12 Mbps down and 0.5 Mbps up. That’s roughly 1.5 MBps. Your line’s maximum is around 18 Mbps, but the ISP capped it at 12 Mbps. They might improve the profile a bit—perhaps you could reach 15 Mbps max. Contact the ISP for a better modem or router and test it out.
