since when 30 fps becomes unplayable
since when 30 fps becomes unplayable
Hi everyone, just a quick observation: back when 3DFXs, first Radeons, and GeForces were popular, aiming for around 30 fps was considered the standard. Nowadays, we're pushing that number even higher. It looks like if a game doesn't maintain a steady 60 fps, it's likely not doing well. I've been playing some recent titles—Doom, ME: Andromeda, Fallout 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider—at 1080p with medium to high settings and a Ryzen 5 2400G GPU. They run smoothly most of the time, about 90%. I was surprised to find Rivatuner showing me around 35 fps on average in many cases! What do you think? Has the 30 fps mark started being seen as poor quality just for marketing reasons? I'm not focusing on competitive or multiplayer games, just single-player action, adventure, or RPGs. In addition, some individuals claim that 60 FPS seems too slow... lol
I sometimes play games on my father's old computer and feel fine with 40 to 45 frames per second, which makes me wonder why 60 FPS would feel so sluggish.
It's mainly about being exposed to 144 or more for extended periods. I usually handle games at 100-144 FPS, but when it drops to 60 it becomes noticeable, especially at 45 which feels very rough. It's all about perspective, since I used to play and 45FPS was smooth.
This could be true but I'm not sure—it might depend on personal feelings. I've been playing Fallout 4 a lot and find it very smooth... according to Rivatuner, the average frame rate is around 30 to 35 fps, which seems quite stable for me.
It's all about getting accustomed to higher frame rates. If you spend extended periods on a 144Hz screen, switching to a 30-60Hz one would definitely notice the change.
It's not. It works just fine. It's only "unplayable" for those accustomed to 60 FPS and that's all they're after now.
But generally, consistency matters more than exact figures. An inconsistent 144 FPS will feel worse than a steady 60 FPS. Similarly, a stable 30 FPS is preferable to an unstable 60 FPS.
