Apologies, I assumed a Mac version existed. It appears compatibility is limited to Windows and Linux. Other choices are also viable.

They could simply rely on Office 365, as it provides the newest features for Microsoft Office. A separate 2013 edition isn't necessary on a Mac because 365 already includes those updates.

It’s a misunderstanding. Office for Mac 2011 is mainly an updated version of Office 2010 for Mac, with only some visual UI adjustments. Office 2010 (and by extension Office 2011 for Mac) shares most of the same functionality as Office 2013. The key differences lie in Microsoft Account/OneDrive integration, a significant UI redesign, and several minor tweaks—features you’re unlikely to notice or rely on. As noted, you might also get an Office 365 subscription allowing online access via browser, which could include Office 2011 for Mac if it supports the latest Windows updates.

I don't use word, nor anything else, but apparently Microsoft has deliberately ripped stuff from it when ported to mac. Not my words, I was looking on a mac forum and they said that directly. Also, they said there is about half as much functionality as the latest version... 365 sounds good, told them about it and they said they might do one month for starters.
