I read this article and decided to create something similar. I aim to enhance my monitor and graphics card for running older games like Witcher 3 and Divinity: Original Sin at 4K with 60 frames per second. Eventually, I plan to tackle the new Elder Scrolls 6 title. My current configuration includes a Maximus Formula VII 4790k at 4.4 GHz GTX 980, two SLI configurations with 32GB RAM, a 2400 MHz CL10 processor, a 256GB Samsung 850 Pro SSD with two external HDDs for storage, a 750W Gold power supply (EVGA SuperNOVA G2), and a 24-inch 1080p display. I’m thinking about replacing the 980 with an RTX 3080. Upgrading the RAM is an option, but my existing 2400 MHz CL10 is already quite high. There used to be some rumor about CL9 at 2400 MHz, but I couldn’t find it when I bought my PC in 2015, so I settled for CL10. My SSD is an 850 Pro, which seems to be deteriorating, performing poorly in tests. I’m weighing a full OS reinstall on a 1TB Samsung 970 Pro Plus NVMe M.2 SSD, possibly needing a PCIe adapter. I attempted CPU overclocking, but stability issues followed, or maybe I missed a chance. Any suggestions? Edited October 31, 2020 by Raging_Dragon

GPU upgrade is definitely on the table, but you might still face CPU limitations. Upgrading RAM doesn’t really matter since you’re likely switching platforms soon. Keeping your existing setup fast would be better—wasting resources wouldn’t help.

4k 60 cpu works well. A GPU upgrade is necessary. Upgrading RAM isn’t worth it at that stage. Better RAM won’t make much difference between 1066mhz or 2400mhz. The exact 750w PSU?

I possess... (glances at order from 2015...) an EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 with 80PLUS Gold certification, ATX12V/EPS12V, 750W power supply. I also revised my initial comment. It should work adequately despite some wear over time. I know there will be performance limits, but upgrading the whole system isn’t necessary. Back in 2015 I told my wife my PC would likely last about a decade before spending around $3K (Canadian) on a replacement. I’m selling some rare pen & paper RPG supplements to get the funds for a new monitor and GPU. Updated October 31, 2020 by Raging_Dragon

Let me clarify your point. It seems there was a mix-up in the context—earlier you mentioned a 4-core CPU causing stutter in new games, but now you’re referring to smooth performance at 4K 60fps. That’s a different scenario. Make sure you’re aligned on the specific situation you’re discussing.

I mainly focus on older titles from around 2014 to 2018.

Usually seen only in 1080p or 1440p, though certain games might experience these problems.

Sure, I understand. You're not recommending the 3080. You can look up YouTube, but a 3070 is already a limitation for a 7700k. A tech YouTuber has tested it already.

It's okay. Consider a used 2080, a 2080 Ti, or something similar. Or invest in a card you can carry when upgrading later—like 6800/6800XT or 3070/3080.

Upgrade the graphics card for better performance. For 4K resolution, expect only a slight change in frame rate compared to a new CPU setup—around 10% difference. To hit 100fps at 4K, consider a 3080 or 6800XT. For 60fps at 4K, a 3070 or 6800 might work well.
