I have an i5-8600K processor. It doesn’t seem like a poor choice, but to push its performance, I’d need a new motherboard since my current one can’t handle overclocking. That’s why I wondered if getting a new CPU would make sense too, especially after seeing a lot of content about the Gen 4 series from AMD. Will they really outperform today’s models enough to justify the investment? Or should I stick with the more affordable option? I’m considering the Ryzen 9 3900X as an alternative.

Wait for Zen 3—it looks promising. If the costs were too high or you weren’t happy, you can switch to Zen 2 at a lower price unless you require a new board, which is best done now. Edited June 15, 2020 by TofuHaroto

You might want to hold off if you're not eager to upgrade...

You need it immediately and Intel currently has 10,700 units available. For AMD, there are many solid options without any pressure.
