I'm setting up a PC mainly for gaming and work as a mechanical engineer. I'm unsure if it's better to buy now or wait until the Zen 3 CPU is released next month. If I wait, I was thinking about getting the 5900X. I understand it might be a bit unpredictable when new CPUs arrive. Would the performance of the Zen 3 CPU be worth the extra 100?

Extra 100? Sounds like the 5900x should add $50 more unless you're outside the US. The performance boost for a single core at 4.0GHz is about 20%, and these chips are quicker than 4GHz single cores. It should work similarly to the 3000 chips. If you wait, I’d be happy to check.

Uncertain about the Ryzen models you use, but none of them have been successfully overclocked beyond what I’d consider decent. The 1800x, 1700x, 3600, 3700, and 2700 variants have all performed poorly in that regard.
