Hello everyone, I own a modem from 2012 that works with WiFi 4 (802.11n) and currently gets about 40 Mbps on my phone. If I upgrade to a router supporting 5 GHz, will my speed improve to around 40 Mbps or more? My ISP offers up to 100 Mbps.

It really depends on your device. If your phone only supports 2.4 GHz, upgrading to 5 GHz might not improve performance unless the new modem also works at 2.4 GHz. You could keep the existing modem and use a separate wireless router, connecting them via an Ethernet cable—let the newer router manage the wireless tasks while the modem translates Ethernet to the ISP’s protocol.

It depends on your gadget because 5GHz availability isn't common. If your device supports 5GHz, use it.

5GHz Wi-Fi differs significantly from 5G cellular networks. Many devices now use 5GHz Wi-Fi regularly.

You're using an outdated modem, which is why your ISP should supply a newer one at minimal expense. Ghz mainly affects speed, but the real improvement comes from a modem or router that supports AC/Ax standards. This boosts performance as long as your phone can handle those protocols. What you're referring to is common and has been around for a long time.

The issue is that I plan to relocate after a few months, which may cause my ISP to alter the service, but the contract will still be renewed. That's why I decided to purchase a wireless router and link it to my modem.
