Should I Overclock my PC?
Should I Overclock my PC?
Hey to anyone reading this, I've been using this setup for about a year now and was thinking about whether upgrading the overclock would improve performance. The components I have are:
Motherboard: MSI Z270 GAMING PRO CARBON LGA 1151 ATX
Processor: Intel Core i7 7700K Quad Core LGA 1151 4.2 GHz Unlocked
Graphics Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Gaming OC 11GB Video Card
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB (2x 16GB) DDR4 3200MHz Black
SSD: Samsung 960 EVO 500GB M.2 NVMe SSD MZ-V6E500BW
Monitor: AOC AGON AG322FCX 31.5" FHD 144Hz FreeSync Curved
Cooler: Cooler Master Seidon 240P 240mm LED AIO
With this information, should I consider overclocking and how would I start? Since I'm new to this, any guidance would be really helpful. Thanks a lot!
Hi samaru
Why not maximize your CPU performance with the i7 7700K? The extent of overclocking you can achieve depends on the required voltage and the Silicon Lottery. If you're lucky, you might reach 5GHz.
Start by reviewing some Overclocking guides. They should be accessed through the BIOS, not a third-party Windows app.
Here are a couple of recommendations:

https://edgeup.asus.com/2017/kaby-lake-o...ing-guide/
Follow some basic rules: Overclock in 200Mhz increments and stress test each stage.
Monitor temperatures during load and keep Core voltage stable with your BIOS multiplier.
Look for the optimal LLC setting to avoid voltage drops under pressure.
Good luck, and feel free to ask if you run into any problems.
