Should I get into VR?
F1 doesn’t work well with VR. Codemasters seem unreasonable about adding VR support; I won’t be getting Dirt Rally 2 until they do. Still, dirt was one of the games I found hard to get smooth performance on—I was okay with it, but I worried it would start stuttering again. Same goes for Project Cars 2; I don’t play PC1 in VR because its implementation was poor and looks really bad.
I own an i7 7700hq with a GTX1060 and it's handling games such as Beat Saber, BoxVR, and Work Simulator well. The American Truck Simulator ran smoothly too. My main suggestion is to verify the headset compatibility for the titles you plan to play. I wanted to attempt Dirt 4 but not VR-compatible. Dirt Rally and Rift are available on Steam. VR games tend to be very niche, created by small teams for a limited audience. I believe it won't become obsolete soon, but current tech limits its potential. In about a decade it might be amazing or obsolete. My take is that VR suits enthusiasts only. For me, the appeal was Beat Saber. For others, it could be different. The best advice is to test it before deciding whether to purchase. Gaming conventions are now widespread and showcase these experiences. Give it a try and see if you enjoy it before making a choice.
It makes sense... I should examine the particular VR games available and test them out with a headset. I’m hoping developers will eventually include VR support, especially for racing and driving experiences.
I wouldn't go ahead with it just yet. It's best to let VR technology develop a bit more before committing any funds. I haven't tried the Vive yet, but I've used the Rift. The Screendoor effect is noticeable, and capturing clear images is tough with the restricted lens tweaking. Tracking works fine, and the controllers are decent. It would really benefit from higher resolution, faster refresh rates, and improved optics—otherwise it might be worth cutting back on spending.
I was really engaged when using my friend's Windows Mixed Reality headset. I acquired a used Rift and an RX 580 from Ebay and connected them to my i7 3770 computer—something I got for free during a business upgrade. All the games I've played run smoothly, and I now mostly play in VR. People who have tried genuine VR know this isn't just a passing trend. If you were me, I'd look for someone with a Rift or a Vive (or WMR) and see what they think.
I got Rift few months back and I really enjoy it. Its definitely not a fad as was said above. There are some awesome games made for VR since I even got the Rift, and they are awesome. Yes, the game selection is still very limited when compared to normal PC games and there is a lot of trash and "games" (tech demos) in the store but some of the games that are out there are absolutely worth it to get VR for. I recommend Oculus over the Vive, but its up to you. Some of the really good VR games are Oculus exclusives (I know you can play them on Vive but the controllers dont compare, Oculus touch is imo way superior to the Vive controllers). You can also get a full room scale with Oculus but you need 3rd sensor to buy separately or live with just 2 of them but have some occasional tracking issues. I definitely NOT recommend you to just pick the head piece and play with a normal controller or KB and Mouse. Its not really good experience most of the time.
