You already possess a permanent Windows 7 key, but you can get Windows 8.1 via DreamSpark which ends in 2017. Decide whether an upgrade is necessary based on your needs.

Consider upgrading to Windows 10 first.

From my perspective these dreamspark keys usually last a long time. I prefer Windows 8.1 for both gaming and everyday tasks.

8.1 is significantly improved, and Windows 10 will likely be discontinued soon.

The cost to move from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 will be lower than the transition from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

The GPU, software, and operating system often don’t perform well right away. It might be smarter to wait a few months before purchasing. Thank you for pointing that out.

In school and on my laptop I used Windows 8 and I dislike it. For instance, turning it off feels like a struggle—I got Windows 8.1 from Dreamspark and I prefer it. It offers excellent features, an intuitive interface (they include a power button, the search engine is fast, you’re not pushed into using the Metro design), strong multi-monitor support with useful tools, and it runs smoothly. I suggest it; Windows 8.1 is quite different from Windows 8.

They often come with many issues at first. Still, worth considering if you're ready for the investment.
