Yes, you can use the Windows key on your existing laptop for the PC you're building. You don't necessarily need a new key unless you want a dedicated one.

Could use a Microsoft account for transfer, though not fully reliable. Probably needs to purchase a new key, as the current one only strips a watermark and unlocks certain features.

Could you use an authentic Windows key or would a counterfeit version work? Would using a bootleg key change your system in any way?

You're asking about the meaning of "bootleg." It refers to illegally obtained software, often through gray market sites that trade Windows keys. Whether it's safe to use these is uncertain and depends on local laws. Your personal experience with such platforms can differ.

We can't provide suggestions for bootleg keys—it goes against our guidelines. Plus, since you're using your own operating system, which often contains important accounts, it's better to purchase an authentic key instead. However, you might consider transferring the key through an MS account first.

= Locked status confirmed - OEM keys can be used just once. Sharing bootleg keys or methods for obtaining them violates community guidelines.
