To join your Steam friends' games, you must log in to their system at least once or they need to connect to yours to play.

Start by having a friend log in and download at least one game.
Next, sign into your account and attempt to play the game.
You’ll see a prompt asking if you’d like to email a sharing request or purchase the game yourself.
Send the request via mail.
???
The reward comes later.

You could simply employ TeamViewer and let them log in via that.

I tried this with my cousin. Even though he's an hour away, using Teamviewer is simpler. Just be sure you're confident in the person you're working with.
