I've been facing problems loading websites over the past day or two, across various devices—phones, computers, and even an Xbox. Platforms like Twitch and Reddit don't load through apps or browsers on any of them. It's happening with most websites I try, whether news sites, gaming platforms, or anything else. When they do work, everything functions perfectly. The issue seems consistent across all devices in my house. Does this sound like an ISP DNS problem or something else? I've tried everything possible but haven't found a solution. Any suggestions someone might have?

If everything is on the same network, I believe you're onto something. Check with your ISP and the DNS settings on your router. Are you using the default DNS provided by your ISP? You might want to switch to a known reliable one like 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 to test. Consider setting the DNS statically on a single device during an outage as a trial, then update the router to use DHCP-assigned DNS. Another idea: open Wireshark on a machine and run a traceroute when performance drops to observe network traffic.

Hey, thanks for the response. I attempted to switch the DNS on both phones but the problem persisted. While preparing for a traceroute, I learned from a colleague that they were facing the same issue. It seems like an ISP-related matter, which based on past experiences should get resolved eventually. I hope this isn’t a joke—I’d have liked to laugh about it too. SuddenlyLink/Optimum appears to be a major issue in my area. Appreciate the feedback.

They contacted tech support for hours of frustrating troubleshooting. The modem was restarted and reset multiple times, even factory reset. Eventually it stopped working and they kept insisting a new modem was needed. It turned out to be years of calls and visits with little progress. The company seems unreliable, making it seem like buying a new modem was inevitable. It was surprising they didn’t need one after all. Edited September 15, 2023 by JS1983

They sound worse than Comcast, which is telling me a lot. Are there other options nearby? I’m considering switching if the service isn’t reliable. A 5G home network from T-Mobile might be a better fit, I think.

Hey, no worries, just a quick update. I was really hoping to try Starlink since there weren’t many other options, but now I’m worried about potential data limits. Suddenlink/Optimum used to be terrible until a while ago, when lawyers started bringing it up in the media. For years I relied on my internet whenever it got warm outside—modem channels would drop and go dark around 4-6 p.m., then disappear until the next day. Same with TV. It was a regular part of life every season, rain or shine. Things started to change a bit earlier this year, but now I’m seeing some issues again. I’m getting nervous about the colder months because of that. Packet losses kept hovering around 30-50% for years. Once the news calmed down, I expected things to stabilize, but it feels like it’s heading back toward what it was. It’s strange to think my old dial-up connection might have been better than Suddenlink for so long.
