Setup for multiple gaming rooms with PC and TV in native mode.
Hey there, I'm familiar with PCs, networking, and media. I've been working on these systems for more than 15 years. Right now, I'm facing some challenges with a setup where I need assistance: Recently, I moved away from PC gaming and started spending more time watching chill games on TV. My goal is to mirror or run my PC directly on the TV without streaming services like SteamLink or Nvidia Box. Problems include:
- TV and PC are in separate rooms, about 15–20 meters apart
- Long cables aren't strong enough for consistent data transfer
- Even with USB3 extenders, the distance causes frequent controller issues
In an ideal setup I'd have:
- HDMI connection to the TV/AV
- At least two controller cables over 15–20 meters
- No need to rely on consoles since my PC is powerful enough
Any suggestions or unusual cable options could help? Thanks!
Best, Carsten
Fiber optic USB extender offers reliable performance despite the higher cost. To simplify screen configurations across multiple displays, I utilize display fusion and create specific profiles. For example, ALT+S+0 activates the main and secondary screens while deactivating others, reorganizing everything as needed. ALT+S+1 switches to TV mode, restoring the previous layout. This tool is a powerful solution for diverse room arrangements, significantly reducing setup time. Highly suggested for varied environments.
You can verify the setup on Linux by skipping the emulation and Unraid parts. You’ll need a motherboard that supports Thunderbolt, along with a long fiber Thunderbolt cable and a dongle featuring HDMI and USB ports.
Initially I appreciated the information. However, the cable costs about 350€, which seems a bit excessive. I discovered an alternative: HDMI/USB over CAT6. Would this also function?
It varies based on the television model you choose. This device falls short compared to HDMI or DP cables in terms of performance. For instance, a 4K TV isn't worth it with this setup. CAT6 offers 1Gbps DP, HDMI 2.1 delivers 48Gbps, while 4K support is limited.
It looks like you're referring to a 4K60 or 4K/100 TV with a sad tone.
I improved my post to show some real-life bandwidth challenges. I also purchased a 10m HDMI 2.1 cable, which was costly but now lets me stream any game on my TV while my PC handles it. For controllers, I use a XBOX One controller connected via a wireless dongle plugged into my PC.
Consider using two distinct cables. One option is available on Amazon for HDMI fiber connections, and another is a USB extension repeater for keyboards. The latter may require verification for compatibility.
It seems you're considering an alternative setup. You could run a 10-meter active USB extension straight through the wall, then connect a wireless dongle to it, keeping the device in your room.
