Setting up Windows 11 without a Microsoft account in June 2022
Before, users could skip the internet after installing Windows and choose a local login. Now that feature is removed, you can still use this method. (1) This isn’t a joke—you’ll need to set up a new Microsoft account. Don’t stress, we won’t use it; just create one on another machine. Avoid any account linked to Xbox or Microsoft Store purchases. (2) When you try to log in with your new Microsoft account, Windows will prompt for a locked account due to excessive attempts. You’ll see a lock message, which is exactly what we’re aiming for. (3) Set up Windows 11 on your new device, connect it to the internet. (4) When prompted for a Microsoft account, select the one that’s currently blocked because of too many logins. Windows will ask if you want to create a local account instead. (5) You’re now free to generate a local account—no online login required. Just follow the steps, and you won’t need to upgrade to an online account. It’s a simple workaround that works well. What seems minor but works nicely? Is Microsoft really as they claim? Or is there more to it?
Wouldn't just setting up a fresh Microsoft account and using it solely for logging into that machine, without connecting it to other profiles or transactions, achieve the same result? Microsoft encourages using the email address and accessing the account on various devices, which is where additional user information originates. What occurs on your PC, whether it's a Microsoft account or local, is visible to the company.
for me, the local account has several reasons: - my windows account (and password) aren't linked to an internet-accessible service - certain tools (like cross-platform SMB) don't work well with ms accounts. - my account name matches across platforms (linux), so i don't have to type a username when connecting via SSH, as it automatically picks the right one. - i don't see any advantage to using an ms account, so switching feels unnecessary. i prefer the OP's solution, even though it keeps reminding me i need a workaround.
The magic word is choice. Unlike most tech companies that claim to offer decisions for users, I prefer the freedom to make my own. This approach stands out because most options available tend to serve the company's goals rather than the user's needs. While I don’t mind the decisions others make, I’m committed to ensuring people retain the ability to choose. That’s why this guide matters to me.
