I’m setting up a new gaming laptop and desktop. I have several copies of Windows 7 codes, a CD, and if I don’t have an optical drive, I’ll use an external USB optical drive. When the computer starts, will it work just like with the original drive inside?

You can also save an ISO file, create a USB stick without a CD, and input your serial number. This was my approach (H440 doesn't support a 5.25-inch drive), without using an optical drive.
