It's not just the storage drives, but possibly the RAID card itself. I own a 2950 and a 2900 III running much older Ubuntu versions than what's currently supported. The specific RAID controller used matters.

The setup tool mentions a "PERC 6/i" configuration, and based on the boot feed, it appears to be an LSI device.

The system comes with firmware linked to the RAID card. Since I'm not using the 6/i mode, I'm working in memory. During startup, you should notice a firmware identifier just above the Perc 6/i RAID setup. Make sure it's current (Dell's site has the latest). Skipping that part, when accessing the Perc 6/i interface, capture a screenshot of its display and share it here—we'll proceed from there...
