I recently assembled a new computer and found it lacks space for an optical drive. I opted for an external one, but it doesn’t seem to function well with Windows 8 despite claiming compatibility. I also have another desktop in my home equipped with an internal optical drive, but I’m wondering if there are alternative methods to install disk-based games.

Using Deamon Tools Lite allows you to generate a desktop image of the optical drive. Place the resulting .iso file on another computer and employ Deamon Tools once more to create a virtual drive that mounts the ISO, effectively simulating the disk on that PC. This setup enables you to install the game as if it were physically present.

Use a separate computer to transfer the disk to a USB drive, then connect it to your PC for installation

You might require an optical drive to play older games that aren't available digitally. You can also purchase them from platforms like Steam, U-Play, Origin, or GOG.
