I need to configure a Raspberry Pi to act as a security barrier, restricting access only to essential websites while letting your Windows 7 system communicate via Ethernet with it.

It depends on how complex the sites are, but if you're targeting "website.com" with its IP, block all other traffic except that specific address.

Why not leverage the security tools on the primary router? It might be simpler to set up a separate network for the Windows 7 machine with defined access rules rather than adding another device. What concerns you here? Protecting data? I’d keep a snapshot of the setup to revert if needed.

The program you're referring to is likely built on the Raspberry Pi, and you'll need to install the appropriate operating system such as Raspbian or another Linux distribution.

The primary router is located a distance away, making me cautious about using Wi-Fi because of vulnerabilities in older Windows versions.

It might be possible to utilize Pihole, though it appears more complicated than simply adjusting the router's settings.

Your threat model focuses on potential vulnerabilities and risks. You're concerned about possible attacks and want to ensure flexibility in network segmentation using VLANs. You believe isolated Wi-Fi connections shouldn't lead to major problems.

I really don’t believe you require a Pi for this. Just pick an affordable router you can buy at a store, and if you’re stuck with Windows or lack device-specific settings on your main router, that works too.

Also, which older programs are still in use and aren't easily compatible with a newer Windows 7 virtual environment?

The issue aligns with the update guide for CVE-2024-30078. It seems you need to review the details there.
