I'm curious about the screw here—does it have a ring, is it set to stay in place by default, or should I remove it? If I need to take it out, what steps should I follow?
If you're referring to an M.2 standoff with a screw already threaded in, yes you should undo the screw and reinstall the standoff. You can either do that while its uninstalled or installed, uninstalled being safer, then just using your hands or pliers to tighen the standoff back down on the motherboard. If it looks like this without a screw installed on that standoff, then you'll have to find it, likely in a plastic bag in your motherboard box.
