It's mainly intended for simple storage, light PLEX/Jellyfin tasks and Sonarr. I've relied on UnRAID for six years but now want to try ZFS/ECC. Around $200 I can buy an Intel Xeon E3-1231v3 SR1R5 2x 8GB Samsung DDR3L-1600 ECC Unbuffered 1.35V M391B1G73EB0-YK0Q from Supermicro, used of course. Will they integrate well? I seldom buy used boards but think Supermicro is trustworthy. EDIT: Do Supermicro boards accept standard consumer CPU coolers?

It should function properly, but I'll continue using Unraid along with your existing setup. This approach will apply to all of these users. Absolutely, any CPU cooler compatible will work with the boards.

I’d stick with Unraid if it offered ZFS support. I noticed the plugin claiming to add ZFS, but it seemed unstable. Thanks!

I've been running the same motherboard on my Free/TrueNAS server for about six years, and it's functioning properly.

I understand TrueNAS can work with PLEX through a plugin. I’m not familiar with Jellyfish or Sonarr, so results might differ. Have you thought about testing TrueNAS inside a virtual machine? It’s wise to try something new in a controlled environment before going live. Confirm it behaves as expected. If you’re comfortable with command-line tools, you could set up FreeBSD in a VM that supports ZFS2.0 and use it for your storage needs.

Currently you have no ECC support with ZFS, just like any other filesystem doesn't require it

Jellyfin offers a similar experience to PLEX but is free and more advanced. It's unclear if it's available on TrueNAS yet. It doesn't seem necessary for my needs, though I occasionally run it locally while my family streams from me (infrequently). I'm using an i3 4170 with ECC support and a consumer MSI board without ECC. While I don't require ECC for ZFS, I'm planning to adopt it. I've grown quite concerned about data safety and find manual checksum processes tedious. It's reassuring knowing ZFS preserves the same data I provided years ago, even if it wasn't corrupted in RAM during transfers.

Does it use a GPU for video encoding? If not you could run it inside a Bhyve VM. It's a fairly basic VM appliance that comes with TrueNAS. Just install a Guest OS and away you go.

It might work but I haven't tried it before or used PLEX. I seldom move files, except audio while browsing in a browser. I configure family players for direct play. If it's not available on TrueNAS right now, I'm sure it will be soon. It's becoming quite popular.

I support the Truenas scale as an alternative choice. Various helpful functions can be executed via Kubernetes or Docker apps. It has been tested on a spare machine and performs well.
