I have Windows 10 Enterprise installed on a computer. I need it to restart once without updates, then again after a delay with actual updates applied. I’m familiar with Task Scheduler and shutdown.exe but haven’t found details on handling updates via restarts.

As an enterprise user, you can access the update settings, select advanced options, pause the restarts, and then disable the defer feature.

You want Windows to restart automatically under two conditions: once without updates and again when updates are installed. The approach should focus on managing update handling rather than altering restart behavior directly.

If you halt and turn off the wuauserv service, then restart it again, followed by enabling it once more—might seem a bit awkward.
