Set a custom name for your Minecraft server instead of using an IP address. Consider a more memorable domain like your own name or a creative alias. For the Mac Mini, you might want to explore free DNS services that don’t require a paid setup. Since the guide you tried didn’t work with your system version, look for alternatives tailored to macOS and older software environments. Let me know if you need help finding suitable options.

Execute pihole for a straightforward DNS solution. Your router's DNS service should already handle this, or NetBIOS can manage it within your local area. Are you configuring DNS for your private network or publicly?

This should work with a Raspberry Pi. You can check by testing the port you received.

Is it for use within your local network or across the wider internet? No worries, works on any Linux machine and should function on macOS as well.

Because it's not on your local network, you must purchase a domain and set up a record linked to your home IP address. You won't be able to run a server for this purpose.

When you finally have cash, you might find a very cheap domain through Google Domains. I believe several options are available for around $9 per year without any hidden charges, and they provide guides on setting up dynamic IP forwarding (most consumer addresses). With a domain in hand, you can also obtain a free TLS certificate from Let's Encrypt.
