she’s offering me her 2012 macbook because she thinks it’s outdated, and i was thinking about boosting the ram to 8gb plus swapping in a solid-state drive instead of the old optical disk. i wanted to know if bootcamp could let me install windows 10 on the new ssd while still keeping the original 500gb os x hard drive. i’m aiming for a dual boot setup so i can run windows and mac together, which would let me sell my old desktop and fund the upgrade. i also have a gaming laptop from msi, but i plan to keep it for my local network use and sell the desktop to free up space.

Great deal, theses macbooks are really wanted cause easily upgradeables and can stay alive forever. We have a fleet of macbooks at work from 2009 to 2013, with new SSDs they work like a charm and they're still even good for on-the-go video-editing If I'm not wrong, the "clean" way is to : - Format the SSD with a GUID partition table (instead of MBR), and create 1 partition with the OSX extended file system. - Use the bootcamp assistant to get the drivers and to create a space in this partition to fit Windows (even if it is the entire partition) - Use the bootcamp assistant to create an bootable USB key with Apple drivers (previously downloaded) and an official ISO of Windows - Boot on the USB key, format the partition into NTFS from the Windows installer, and install. - Enjoy Windows with fully operational drivers on a Mac
I set it up by first adding only the bootcamp drivers onto a USB drive. After turning off the Mac and removing the old hard drive, I installed a blank SSD and used the Windows 10 DVD via the optical drive. I formatted the SSD to match Windows requirements and installed Windows 10. Once it was running, I connected the USB with the drivers and completed the setup. After powering off the laptop, I swapped in the original hard drive and restarted it. Now, by holding the option key during boot, I can switch between Windows and Mac; for a Mac restart, I access the Bootcamp menu and select OS X restart.
