My old laptop is having trouble with the hard drive port, and I can't connect any HDD or SSD (including M2). My only choice is to run Linux Mint on an 8GB USB drive. Will it work well? Is 8GB sufficient? (Don't ask me to purchase a new USB, as my area is isolated)

Unlikely: https://linuxmint-installation-guide.rea...stall.html Using a USB stick will also be a bad experience.

Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Arch Linux, and openSUSE. Each offers different features and user communities.

The issue isn't about size alone; performance and stability matter. Upgrading to a bigger drive or SSD might help, but Linux Lite may still struggle with speed and reliability.

For an 8GB limit, choosing Arch Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD or Alpine Linux could be more practical.
