Consider exploring alternative home server solutions besides Windows Home Server 2011. Look for options that offer straightforward setup, remote file access, and network connectivity to multiple devices.

FreeNAS offers strong capabilities and performance, yet falls short in simplicity. I suggest Amahi Home Server. It comes loaded with features (thanks to plugins), is designed for storage servers, and emphasizes a user-friendly experience that FreeNAS doesn’t provide as well. Edit: Also worth mentioning, wolfslab is free, but WHS 2011 isn’t.

Windows Home server offers little improvement. FreeNAS stands out as a top choice for storage servers.

You're currently using a laptop for FreeNAS and planning to upgrade to a dedicated server.

You're asking about the setup requirements for the server. How much effort are you willing to invest in configuring it yourself? Are you looking for a straightforward installation or something more advanced that suits a power user? I assume you're planning a dedicated machine with strong hardware, from an Intel Celeron to an AMD Opteron or Intel Xeon, equipped with ample ECC RAM and storage.

You're looking for Amahi instead of FreeNAS. I prefer FreeNAS, but I enjoy exploring advanced tools and expanding my knowledge (I have the time). Unless you're already familiar with FreeNAS, I wouldn't recommend it. Amahi demands less system power compared to FreeNAS, so you won't need a high-end server to get the most out of it. That's why I'd choose Amahi in your situation.

I’m seeing a less powerful server, which seems to fit Amahi well. Vitalius is correct—lower specs are typical for FreeNAS, and it matches what I have for my setup.
