Many have mentioned that learning the background and narrative enhances your enjoyment of the game, which is true for me. I didn’t play the initial two titles, but I watched several YouTube videos created by skilled individuals summarizing the entire story behind both games. This greatly improved my understanding while playing the final one.
Yes for Witcher 2, no for Witcher 1. While it held its own at release, it falls short now—mechanics felt sluggish and the narrative merely rehashed the original books without much depth. On the flip side, it stands out as a solid standalone experience, though it lacks the expansive freedom of Witcher 3 and ends with an abrupt cliffhanger. I’d see it as a balanced blend of a prequel and introduction to Witcher 3.
I recently came across information about the 1 and 2 on the wikia; it gave me a clear grasp of what happens in the third, which is definitely one of my top favorite games ever.
Thirty hours can be quickly increased by doubling your pace, thoroughly investigating each area at full intensity.
Well, perhaps for those who want everything done. I tackled every available quest at max difficulty and managed under 35 hours roughly. Still, it feels more valuable than most titles. Shadow of Mordor took about 25 hours, and Blood and Wine stands out in every sense. Hearts of Stone might need around 8 hours, but being part of the main game adds depth to the base experience (like runewords and points of interest).
Witcher3 marked my debut into the expansive RPG world. It sets the benchmark! @JohnT has a point—it's quite intense... and the resolutions feel very European Eastern. A Grimm fairy tale vibe, reminiscent of classic tales. The music and atmosphere are deeply engaging (especially with headphones on). The Blood & Wine expansion adds a vibrant mix (and it's been praised for its own merits). I own every paid expansion. The studio also provides bonus downloadable content with the initial purchase. That’s why I’m a fan. My only issue is searching for another Witcher3 experience. Alright, have fun! @VicRik Witcher 3 Blood & Wine Review... a year ago.
