Select a secondary PC CPU option.
Hello, I'm working on a secondary build for a side project using budget components. My CPU is an Intel i5 6600k, and it's running smoothly with the RX 570 8GB. I've boosted it to 4.3 GHz and found the games perform better than expected. Recently, I discovered an Intel Xeon E3-1240V6 for less than what I paid for the 6600k. Since I can return the older CPU, I'm considering the Xeon for its potential advantages. Which one would you prefer? Are there any compatibility concerns with my motherboard, Asus Z170-P?
Z170 boards aren't officially meant to work with Xeon CPUs. Intel began excluding them starting with Skylake. Some Xeon v5 models were added to certain boards, but it's safer to choose a more recent platform or a standard desktop i7. This Xeon is similar to an i7 6700 but lacks built-in graphics. In principle, you might get a bit more clock speed and Hyperthreading if it functioned properly.
It's the top choice you can get with that chipset if you don't want to modify the BIOS.
Any 6core 12thread really is above the 6600k. 3rd gen usually is looked at but for 50€ ya ain getting more. Problem with z170 is the 7700(k) is the fastest chip but hilariously overpriced
