Hello. I'm searching for engaging narratives that transport you away from reality. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm open to hearing about experiences similar to this—after all, what feels like escape is subjective. For reference, some titles that created this effect include: Final Fantasy series, Nier Automata, Cyberpunk 2077, and others like Horizon Zero Dawn, Dragon Quest 11, Bioshock Infinite, Mass Effect, Fallout series, Witcher 3, and Darksiders 2. I haven't played Tactical RPGs such as Divinity: Original Sin or FF tactics, nor have I tried Dragon Age Origins. If you have any favorites, please share them!
You haven't talked about the Metro lineup, but you likely tried it. It's worth trying if you haven't already—it offers a mix of linear and flexible quest sequencing. The Stalker series... if you haven't played it, give it a go. For Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl, the Stalker Complete mod is essential—it preserves the original feel while enhancing atmosphere, night skies with authentic stars, improved lighting and shadows that heighten tension. The earlier Stalker titles run on 32-bit and can crash, especially with mods; it's worth a try despite occasional hiccups. Even brief crashes are manageable if you save often. More recent options like Days Gone provide engaging variety and a solid story, while the Outer World series offers a fun RPG experience with space themes. Half-life remains a must for fans of the franchise, though the original source is best for immersion. SOMA delivers a compelling narrative, and Black Mesa isn't recommended unless you're already familiar with the series. Dead Space and Transistor are solid picks, while Celeste offers a smooth platforming feel with great music. A recent patch for Fallout 3 fixes compatibility issues, making it playable on Windows 10. Atom RPG is gaining attention, but its mechanics differ from previous entries. If you're curious, explore these titles—they each bring something unique to your gaming experience.
I love playing narrative-driven games. Sometimes they’re massive titles like Bioshock Infinite and the Dishonored series. Other times they’re smaller indie projects such as Child of Light and Oxenfree. I appreciate the story-focused Tomb Raider releases. Kentucky Route Zero, Firewatch, Life Is Strange, Borderlands, Gris, Ori and the Blind Forest, Hellblade Senua’s Sacrifice, Gone Home, What Remains of Edith Finch, and To the Moon are all favorites. If you enjoy classic point-and-click games, then Indiana Jones and the Fate (if set in Atlantis) stands out. For contemporary options, Deponia is worth checking out.
Yeah, the latest SW title is Jedi: Fallen Order. I haven’t finished it yet but I played it often before getting stuck. I think a new version was released and I haven’t come back to it... not sure why. It was fine in the meantime. SOMA is a horror game, but I don’t enjoy that genre either... it’s more about psychological tension than intense fear. There are moments where you’re running or hiding, but they didn’t feel too overwhelming for me. I still believe the story of SOMA is worth experiencing. I’ve never played games like Amnesia or the Alien series before. If you try Talos, just skip the star puzzles—they’re optional (completing them all gives a different ending). But they can really test your patience; some are frustratingly hard and it’s okay to look up solutions if you need them. Otherwise the game starts simple but becomes much more challenging later on.
