I’d check out VMWare Player, I’ve begun using it recently on my Linux system for different Windows jobs. It doesn’t require special hardware and works well with DX11 support. You might consider a cloud sync service or a removable drive to maintain a uniform setup across devices, provided you only need one copy at a time.

I can't picture desktop equipment lasting long when it's moving frequently across rough roads. I've seen computers get sensitive or stop working because they were handled too often. Even a Panasonic toughbook stopped working after a friend carried it around under his car seat for six months. On the other hand, I've set up a compact NUC, DELL or HP mini PC that's easy to relocate and connect to the network, allowing RDP access wherever needed. It feels like a loss when solid desktops are treated as thin clients.

I’ve used my custom SFF configuration (with the specs you mentioned) during several international flights. It’s been with me for roughly six months, regularly traveling between hotels and work locations in a backpack, and it’s holding up well.

25 miles each way for five days equals 250 miles. Adding Saturday’s extra 50 brings it up. It’s not about rough roads but potholed surfaces. The perfect fix would be spending money on a high-end laptop, which I can’t justify saving a few hundred dollars on licenses each year.

Setup just completed with both Virtualbox and VMware. Virtualbox looks significantly smoother, especially when zooming in and out of technical drawings—it feels natural. VMware boots much quicker, possibly up to 20 times faster, but it lags graphically during zooming, resembling a slideshow with rapid transitions. This performance is on a Ryzen system. I expect to test the VMs next week before heading into the workshop to evaluate their behavior.
