Normie VM will add extra costs that might contribute to your poor frame rate issues. Considering how Proton functions, there will also be some extra load. If you're using a Chromebook, the situation will get even more challenging.

Playing games on Linux or macOS isn't ideal. Consider using VirtualBox or Hyper-V for better performance, and stick with Windows for gaming. MacOS is great for coding, but Windows takes the lead when it comes to gaming.

I don't have specific details about your Chromebook. Could you share more information or check its settings for the specifications?

It's good to hear. Lol, the chromebook was just my initial experience with Linux. The VM gaming try was on my personal machine.

The chromebook was merely a modest 4gb i3, uncertain about the specific models, though it wasn’t the device I used for gaming. That experience was actually my first encounter with Linux overall, and it performed well for web browsing and free office applications. The virtual machine I used to play games featured my personal setup—a Ryzen 5 2600, RX 580, and 16gb of RAM. Sufficiently powerful for gaming, though possibly limited by the VM environment.

It’s possible to achieve smooth FPS with good configurations, but it depends on your hardware and how you set things up. Upgrading to a faster SSD can help, and installing PopOS might improve stability, though the impact varies.

The VM presents the challenge, don't assume an emulated GPU will match a real one. Starcraft 2 and Dota 2 run smoothly on Linux (using Wine for Sc2) and deliver expected performance—just install them directly.

Nice skepticism there. Windows still leads in PC gaming, but it's not immune to challenges from other platforms. The real debate centers on their approach: virtual machines won't match the performance of a direct installation for games. A dual-boot setup would likely be more effective than trying to run everything in a VM.

Or you can dual boot on your existing drive if you have enough diskspace, but yes, installing PopOS on another drive and trying it that way will be far more successful than trying to virtualize things.

I can handle all the games I've been interested in on Linux, delivering comparable or improved speed. The only exceptions are those with straightforward anti-cheat measures.
