I'm looking for experiences where you buy units like barracudas and troops to conquer forts, with real-time battle visibility. Are there any games that match this idea?
Mount & Blade: Warband and Fire & Sword could be a good match. The AI performance isn't great, but the modding scene is solid. The visuals are outdated. It might be worth holding off on Mount & Blade 2, which has been in development for a long time.
Mount and Blade: Warband offers an engaging experience you might like. You assemble a force, bring in soldiers, train them, oversee resources like gold and food. Decide your loyalties and engage in battles presented from either a third or first person perspective. It's a bit dated, but still quite enjoyable. (They're also developing a new version.)

This medieval strategy game is considered one of the best in its time. Other titles like Medieval Total War 1 and 2 are also highly regarded, though fewer people play them.
