The network card handles communication with the port at the other end without Windows involvement. On a LAN, all data destined for the same subnet range travels straight from the switch to the appropriate port, bypassing any router. The router is only necessary when accessing external IP addresses beyond your local subnet, allowing traffic routing between different subnets.
