Hello, I have a fresh system running Windows 8.1 Pro with Windows Defender already set up. I want to know if I need any extra antivirus or internet security software. My job involves working online daily, handling websites, marketing tasks, and frequently downloading content from various sources. Please advise. Thanks!

I previously used AVG free and ZoneAlarm firewall. With AVG free you miss a firewall, and with ZoneAlarm free you lack antivirus protection; using both gives you everything needed at no cost. Depending on your tasks, ZoneAlarm occasionally created problems for me, but for your intended use it should work. The main issue I faced was that it would significantly increase my ping in Battlefield 4 to hundreds.

It varies. They offer assistance yet can also cause irritation. I generally avoid them since they tend to bother me. I rely on Windows Firewall and perform system scans periodically. I've been using it for about two years without encountering any malware. Usually, if you choose the correct download option and steer clear of unreliable sources, you should be safe.

Windows Defender provides a solid foundation. It's not flawless, but it offers reasonable protection as your initial safeguard. I suggest adding MalwareBytes free version as an extra layer of security. Perform comprehensive system scans monthly. It runs efficiently and doesn't interfere with regular tasks. Avoid third-party firewalls; stick with Windows Firewall. If you feel extra cautious, consider deploying pfSense or a reputable hardware firewall for enhanced defense.

I can't afford to lose any data. Please let me know if you think Internet Security is important. I'm not a gamer.

To avoid losing important data, maintain regular backups both on-site and off-site. Store copies on an external HDD or file server, and keep it outside the building—such as at home or a friend’s place. Rotate these off-site backups weekly or monthly. Pair this with Windows Defender and weekly manual scans from MalwareBytes for strong protection. For enhanced security, consider switching to Kaspersky AV or Bit Defender AV instead of Windows Defender, though both require yearly subscriptions. Always retain MalwareBytes for manual checks as a safety net.

I haven't tried it before, so I can't share personal impressions. However, it receives positive feedback. Numerous users rely on it.
