I found a current steam sale and several games I’d like to purchase. The challenge is I don’t have payment details yet—I’ll use my mother’s credit card and pay her in cash. I’m worried about the security of that information and whether these risks might actually occur. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

To access your Steam account, you'll get an email containing a verification code. This is necessary because the login originates from a different device. Without this code—unless someone compromises your email—it's impossible to enter your Steam profile.

If you believe they won't allow you to use it since it isn't yours, that assumption is wrong

When Steam Guard is activated, it focuses on protecting your account in the same way as my own, which uses a unique, randomly created password that I don’t remember but is securely stored on paper somewhere.

No problem at all. Let me make sure I addressed your concern about the credit card details properly.

If you're feeling overly cautious, consider getting a prepaid visa.

If they can't access your Steam account, they won't be able to retrieve the credit card details. You might also be able to remove the credit from your account later. (I'm not entirely confident about that.)

I’m among those who think it’s smarter to use a prepaid visa card for online transactions.

Minimal information shared. Regular users can't obtain such details. Transactions are protected with secure platforms. Steam doesn't store credit card data unless you enable it. You can connect saved cards by using the reminder option during checkout. I've linked my PayPal there. Most sites don't display your full card number on receipts—just the last four digits. Potential threats are similar to other online shopping platforms. If their system is breached, it's a risk. However, losing your account to fraudsters remains the main concern.
