Securing the complete 2.5 Gbps connection from Rogers
Hello! I have a 2.5Gbps fiber connection with Rogers. The fiber enters the house and connects to a Nokia XS-020X-A. This device is linked to their XB7 routers via a 2.5G port on the 10G port of the ONT. The XB7 has four ports: three Gigabit and one 2.5G. I own two computers that can handle 2.5GB and have the needed capacity. I purchased a 2.5GB unmanaged switch. Can I connect the ONT to the switch as well as the XB7 port? How should I configure the XB7 to route traffic and assign IPs for everything? If not, what alternatives exist? Thanks! Chris
Usually the router needs to link straight to the modem or ONT, you can't use a switch in the middle. After that, place your switch between the router and your gadgets.
The issue lies in the fact that the router has just one 2.5 port designated for WAN, while all other connections are limited to gigabit speeds. This is quite inconvenient. The existing gear doesn’t allow customers to link via a wired connection beyond 1Gbps unless they purchase additional hardware.
Plugging your PC directly into the ONT may cause connectivity issues or damage, as it bypasses necessary network settings and security measures.
Hello there! You'll likely need to purchase or set up a router for this to function properly. Excuse me if that sounds like a hassle. Generally, having your own equipment is more cost-effective over time compared to relying on your internet service provider's rentals.
I need to check that and get back to you. I'm looking for a wireless router under $600 with a 2.5 WAN port and at least two LAN ports. I can't find anything matching those specs. I'll send you the IP details once I have the info. Thanks a lot, Wizardy!
The piece explains how switching between ONT and Router functions due to the managed switch feature.
