I have used external monitors in the past with my laptop and had no issues, however this one keeps going black for a second pretty constantly when I'm playing Fortnite. I've overclocked it to 75hz (did that in the past as well without issues) and it works fine on the desktop but in game I hear some sort of buzz from the laptop and the image is unstable and it does that regardless of the refresh rate, so even at stock. To note that I use a hdmi to vga adapter since it's an older monior (which I've used before as well). Any idea why/how to fix?

Verify if the sound is coming from the fans inside your laptop. I noticed the fan began sputtering and making noise, which might indicate it's not spinning at the right speed and could be failing. Dust or debris could also be causing interference. Consider upgrading to a better monitor, such as the one listed at https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16824028006, or borrow one from a friend. An older VGA display is likely nearing the end of its lifespan.

It originated from the laptop but changed depending on the frame rate. The HDMI connection goes straight to the 1650 port, unlike when using the iGPU. Likely the issue was a faulty cable or the overclock wasn’t reliable since stock performance was much smoother with minimal problems.

Buzz is often referred to as coilwhine. Poor connections might definitely cause this issue. I sometimes see a black screen when using a displayport cable from my GPU to the monitor. This happened with both my RTX 3090 and now RX 6900 XT. The same cable and monitor, so it’s likely the cable itself. Before that, I used DVI cables on my GTX 1080 without any problems.

Sure, I noticed you upgraded from an i5-7600K to a Ryzen 5900X and kept using the same system. That’s unusual, so it might not be the hardware issue.
