I need a program that organizes your movie collection and shows them nicely with details like story summaries and genre tags. Something similar to XBMC but designed for desktop without the fullscreen experience or clunky interface. I’ve checked Plex too, but it feels too complex and not ideal for browsing on a computer. For free, open-source options that work well on desktops would be great.

*edit: on 2nd thought, nevermind. You said that you don't want full screen stuff, and that is what this is. Really it is an OS, not just a program. so I don't think this is what you're looking for. I'm using openELEC for a raspberry pi, but I see there are a few different versions of it available for other hardware. It is a ui for the client rPi which gets streamed content from plexmedia server. Now I know you didn't want a plex client but maybe this openelec offers you features that fit your needs better than the standard plex client. might be worth checking out.

Plex Media Server works in a web browser as well as through a desktop app. You can stream videos from the same machine where it's running. If you remove Plex and XBMC, few alternatives remain.

A relaxed fan of films and TV series. It organizes your movies and shows (you can also download them using a torrent client or SABNBD). It doesn’t play the files itself. Create a different share or use VLC or your preferred media player.
