Searching for titles that work well with eGPU configurations
Hi everyone,
I’ve always dreamed of building a good gaming setup, but school and my parents’ dislike for gaming made it tough. I ended up with an XPS 13 9360, which was surprisingly costly and not very powerful.
Using my own funds, I got a Razer Core X Chroma (I chose Ethernet, don’t worry about the price difference), paired with an RTX 2060 (I didn’t get the latest model since it was too expensive, but I managed to buy it for $320).
I wasn’t too worried about TB3 issues because my CPU struggles more than the graphics card.
Performance is okay at 1440p, but I don’t reach 144fps on my 144Hz monitor mainly due to the dual-core CPU. If you have any suggestions for games that don’t rely too much on CPU power, it would be really appreciated.
Configuration:
Laptop:
- CPU: i7 7500U (dual core, 4 threads, 2.7GHz base / 3.5GHz turbo, slightly undervolted)
- GPU: HD 620 (I haven’t adjusted it much since the eGPU handles everything)
- Storage: 512GB Toshiba SSD
- RAM: 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1866MHz
- TB3 PCIe lanes: 2, but it doesn’t really matter much
eGPU:
- Case: Razer Core X Chroma using TB3
- GPU: EVGA RTX 2060 SC Dual Fan
Display:
- Samsung C27HG70 (1440p at 144Hz, HDR600) connected via DisplayPort 1.4, laptop screen off.
For Honor appreciates the GPU performance. Even with my RX 580, it ran at full capacity at 1080p maximum while my 8600k was only at 20%.
Other titles available include Stalker complete mod, metro 2033 redux, metro last light redux, max payne 1 and 2, half-life series (1, blue shift, opposing force, 2, episodes 1 and 2), Sniper Elite 1 and 2, Fallout 3, Fallout 3 New Vegas, Fallout 4, Dead Space 1 and 2, portal 1 and 2, Trine, Trine 2, Torchlight, Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 (classic RPGs), Sine Mora, JamesTown (scroller, shootem up), Celeste, Ori and the Blind Forest, Cave Story +, Braid, and Bastion with great music. More options can be specified if desired. Some games may run at 60fps by design, though high frame rates aren't essential—beauty and playability matter more.
