My hardware details: CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 3600, GPU - GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060, 6GB RAM, Motherboard - ASRock B450 Pro4, UEFI Version 10.31 (latest beta), Storage - Mushkin 2.5" 250GB SATA III 3D SSD and Seagate BarraCuda 2TB at 7200 RPM, PSU - EVGA 500W 80PLUS. Background - My 2TB HDD, used since 2021, is starting to show wear, making file management tricky. I’m considering upgrades for CPU (Ryzen 7 5800X), GPU (RTX 40-series) and PSU before saving for more parts. I bought a 1TB NVMe Crucial P3+ SSD for $60 on Amazon. Its Gen4 specs fit Gen3/2280, but I ran into issues after installation. After checking ASRock’s support page, I found a footnote about pin definition mismatches affecting newer NVMe drives. The PDF mentioned some Gen3/Gen4 M.2 SSDs aren’t compatible due to these differences. What alternatives exist under $90 for a 1TB Gen3x4 NVMe drive? Why do certain drives seem to work while others don’t despite matching specs? Any suggestions or explanations would be appreciated. I shared this in the ASRock forum earlier."

The specifications indicate M2_1 can use PCIe NVMe. M2_2 requires installing the drive, then accessing Disk Management in Windows to initialize the disk. Before that, check the BIOS for slot status. Certain boards let you toggle slots on or off via BIOS settings, and some support upgrading from version 2.0 to 3.0.
