Searching for an M.2 SSD to fit your motherboard while retaining all four SATA drives.
My motherboard offers only four ports, which fits my requirements but limits expansion options. I’m curious if some boards can replace a standard SATA port with an M.2 slot. The description on the B450m DS3H page says it supports a 1 x M.2 connector with SATA and PCIe SSDs, but mentions Socket 3. I’m unsure if that means it uses Socket 3 or not. The manual warns against using a SATA drive with this setup, but doesn’t explain turning off the SATA port to enable M.2. I need clearer guidance before investing money. Thanks in advance for any advice.
I understand, your guide doesn't mention disabling specific SATA ports to allow the M.2 slot to function. (This problem usually happens when NVMe isn't supported and there aren't enough PCIe lanes from the chipset or CPU to power another controller.) If several drives don't work together, the maker (like Gigabyte) usually offers a compatibility chart. I recommend proceeding with it! In the best case, it might not work and you can send the drive back for a refund.
I concur with @kimsejin5, you should be okay. The motherboard manual will clearly indicate whether an M.2 drive affects SATA ports. You’ll usually discover this in the "Storage" section under Specifications. For an illustration, check page 9 of the ASRock BS250M Pro4 manual available at the provided link.
