I own a budget laptop, a Dell Inspiron 3542. Its details are: 4th generation 2c/4t processor running at 1.70 - 2.70 GHz, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, and an Intel HD 4400 chipset. Over the last week I've been searching for an operating system that uses less memory, leaving ample space for personal tasks. I need low disk I/O to avoid slowdowns from multitasking, and an OS with strong memory handling—like precise deallocation of unused data. I'm avoiding any unnecessary or unsuitable software, preferring something practical for daily use: web browsing with a lightweight browser, text editing, and basic applications. Most importantly, I require full driver support for Windows devices. This query applies only to Linux distributions, but other OS options are welcome.

You might consider installing free Linux distributions. I'm running Lubuntu on some old computers and it's performing well. You can install Office apps like LibreOffice and access the internet smoothly.

Are we discussing a mobile Celeron or an i7-4600U? If the chip name begins with an 'i' and you have extra 4GB RAM, you're all set on Windows 10. If you simply dislike Windows and want to give it a hard time, your setup suits any Mint version. I favor Mint XFCE because of its light resource consumption, though other interfaces are also decent and quite useful.

Puppy Linux and Bohdi Linux are both minimal operating systems. They're very low resource usage but lack a lot of visual appeal—ideal if you're after just functionality. You might also find Raspberry Pi distributions like Raspbian suitable, as they require similar system resources to a typical laptop.

I suggest Mint MATE. It carries a bit of a Windows 98 vibe (it's based on GNOME 2). I believe it looks slightly more polished than xfce yet uses minimal memory.
