Searching for a quick WiFi router that offers strong protection.
Over the past few years, renting a router from my ISP has become more expensive, so now buying one directly is the better choice. Since this is my first purchase, I’m looking for advice on how to navigate all the available options. I’m aiming for a budget around $150 (willing to spend a bit more if necessary). Key requirements: support at least 1 gigabit speed, quick file transfer, solid security features, and compatibility with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Also, it should be good for online gaming.
I rely on Mikrotik RB962UiGS-5HacT2HnT due to its extensive customization options. It delivers up to 910/760 MBps (ISP advertises 1 GBps internet). I also appreciate the reliable OS support spanning over a decade. Wi-Fi provides full 400/400 Mbps through AC power. While the setup is quite adaptable, it can be challenging. The price is around €100.
Consider the Asus RT-AX86U/AX86U Pro. It supports WiFi 6 with speeds around 700-800 Mbps via Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet over a cable.
Around me there are few choices from service providers, and the apartment complex further restricts options because of its limited connections. The only reliable one I found is Spectrum.
You're right about Spectrum being the only provider that offers standard cable modems. It's clear from their setup whether you get a gateway or a modem. If their device includes WiFi, that’s a good sign. I believe they might include the modem for free, but you’d pay for renting a gateway if needed—though I’m not sure. Since I don’t have Spectrum and live in a Comcast area, the details might differ.
