Searching for a more silent laptop that includes smart fan management.
Hello everyone,
I'm looking for a quiet Windows or Linux laptop with smart fan management. I currently use a Dell Latitude 5520—it's a reliable business machine priced above €1000, but the fan control isn't ideal. Even in the quietest setting, the fan makes noise for a moment before going silent for ten minutes, then kicking back again, especially when under light use. It's quite bothersome.
I'm hoping to find a device that stays completely silent during light tasks and has a fan that increases smoothly without sudden spikes. If I can't find a good Windows or Linux choice, I might lean toward a MacBook Air with an M-series chip: 15.3 inches, passive cooling, so it's entirely quiet. But I'm not a big Apple user and prefer sticking to Windows or Linux.
I don’t play games much, but I like watching movies and need a good display. Desktop PCs usually let you fine-tune fan settings with tools like Fan Control, which is harder in laptops. My current Dell Latitude’s fan curve is managed by the BIOS, offering no real customization.
Do you have any suggestions for laptops where this problem has been considered?
It varies based on your budget but excluding Mac or fanless windows builds, perhaps even a surface tablet, you’ll encounter those problems. The compromises here involve choosing between macOS or Windows for ARM, or opting for a tablet. If display quality matters, the base MacBook Pro is worth considering, though it shares the same chip spec as the Air and has fans—something I’ve experienced with my 14” M1 Pro without any noise. You might also check the refurb store to cut costs by a few hundred for Apple products.
