Search for third-party IM solutions on Skype.
Hi, I’ve been using the IM+ extension for Chrome before, it worked well at first. Now it doesn’t support Skype anymore—most other IM tools are unavailable, and even the Skype portable version isn’t functioning. I don’t want to keep Skype installed on my PC because it’s hard to remove and has many ads with a clunky interface. I’m looking for another way to chat with my Skype contacts without installing it.
You can send messages via any email provider like Hotmail or Outlook.
Trillian 5 stands out as the sole IM offering that enables Skype text and audio chat. This choice stems from Skype’s decision to introduce SkypeKit, a framework that lets third-party IM solutions integrate with their platform. To maintain privacy and security, Skype supported the initiative, allowing distribution of the software. Video calls were planned later, but Microsoft acquired Skype, shifting priorities toward monetization through ads. As a result, Microsoft discontinued SkypeKit support and restricted alternative distributors, forcing users to rely on ads. Consequently, Trillian 5 continues to function with SkypeKit installed, though users must already have it on their system. If you're keen on Trillian 5, feel free to reach out—I find it impressive for its cross-platform conversation sync and its Windows integration.
Thanks for the advice, now I can talk without needing any installations.
You need to use that email for creating your Skype account; otherwise it won't function. It might be possible to adjust the email in your Skype settings, allowing IM through it, but I'm not sure.
