I’m considering a Ryzen 5 2600 at about $170 for gaming, but I want to know if there’s a comparable Intel CPU that offers better performance for gaming while also needing a dedicated cooler.
9600 or 9600k based on your overclocking needs. Remember, matching all Ryzen models with a non-A320 board unlocks overclocking possibilities.
I noticed the performance section but forgot about the equal price part. For that cost, I’d probably consider the 9400F; however, you can overclock the 2600 to surpass it if I recall right.
Not matching the same cost, not even close. Even before the major price reduction (before the 3rd gen Ryzen launched the 2600 at around $230 here in Canada), it was a better deal for your money. Right now, for the same performance, you might be paying an extra $100 compared to Intel (9400), factoring in the cooler and board differences. Because of the drop, the 2600 is actually a solid purchase today.
If the rumors hold, the latest Intel developments are moving to a different socket, possibly socket 1200, which could mean the current options are no longer viable.
The Core i5-9400F is the nearest option available, though it costs around $200 CAD. The i3-9350KF is expected to fit in that range, but I haven’t found it on Amazon.ca or Newegg.ca near that price. A 4-core/4-thread processor from 2020 isn’t something I’d prefer to buy.
For a tight budget, the 2700x is a better choice compared to most budget intel options. It’s just a bit higher than the 2600 right now. With a mid-range graphics card, the extra cost for Intel isn’t necessary unless you’re aiming for top frame rates.
