I occasionally check Newegg just for fun, without planning to purchase anything. Yesterday I found an Intel AX200 Gig+ Wi-Fi 6 Desktop Kit priced at around $30. It seems like a good deal, but it needs a Key A or Key E m.2 slot to work. My research didn’t reveal any motherboards with those slots, nor did I locate adapters that connect directly from PCIe 1x to Key A/E. This raises the question: who would benefit from this card? It’s a solid value and not tied to a questionable Chinese manufacturer, yet the limited availability of compatible boards makes it hard for many to use. What motherboards could run it without adapters, and what would buyers need to purchase if they lack Key A/E slots? (EDIT: Most of this detail isn’t essential, here’s my response with key points)

Please let me know your current CPU setup so I can suggest compatible options. If you're planning a replacement, sharing your model will help. Otherwise, do you need a CPU and a new motherboard together?

These boards typically include Wi-Fi built-in through an A/E port (though newer models use a different interface). This seems more like an enhancement rather than a core upgrade. You might find adapters available, but they usually come pre-wired with the card, making it another upgrade. In reality, purchasing a dedicated PCIe card could be more cost-effective than adding an adapter.

I currently have an i5-8400 and an H370 GAMING PLUS from MSI, but got a killer 9700k deal from Micro Center ($200 new). My current board should be fine because I don't intend on overclocking, but I might sell my current board to my brother and get something like a Z390 Steel Legend from ASROCK. The website for this board only mentions 802.11ac speeds, below the 802.11ax speeds of the Intel AX200 upgrade kit. I don't see any reason why the AX200 wouldn't work with this board, but the spec sheet doesn't explicitly list this part: " Supports CNVio1 WiFi module(Intel Wireless-AC 9560 / 9462 / 9461) only.)" Are these parts compatible or would I have to look elsewhere? (NOTE: I don't NEED Wi-Fi right now, and I'm very happy running an ethernet cable into my PC, but some college dorms are stupidly designed and don't have anywhere to plug an RJ45 ethernet cable into, and that's obviously a problem).

It's quite a situation, isn't it? As discussed before, you'd probably do better with a PCIe card and an AX200 if you have a spare slot. Regarding the LAN port, you're right to wonder—wouldn't they likely offer Wi-Fi 6 then? Well, if not, this conversation might not matter much because you wouldn't be able to connect a Wi-Fi 6 modem or access point either without a LAN connection. So essentially, you'd depend on their Wi-Fi and whatever standard they support. But I think even with Wi-Fi 4/5, the AX200 remains a solid choice for future-proofing or home use.
